Moving 101: 4 Handy Tips For Box Truck Rentals

Whether you are moving down the block or across the country, a box truck rental is a valuable tool to have. These moving trucks allow you to pack up and move your items yourself, which can save you a significant amount of money. However, in order to ensure you get exactly what you want at a good price, you should follow these four tips:

1. Choose a Truck You Are Comfortable Driving

Box truck rentals come in a variety of sizes from small cargo vans to large moving trucks. While a larger truck might get the job done faster, it might not be ideal for you. If you are not comfortable driving large vehicles, it is definitely better to opt for a smaller sized vehicle. After all, you want to ensure that you can drive the truck confidently and safely. If you must choose a larger vehicle, take some time to learn how to drive it first. Rent it for an extra day or two and drive it around parking lots or rural roads to get a feel for its size.

Additionally, verify the type of vehicle you will be driving. While most trucks have an automatic transmission, some might be stick-shift. So it's always a good idea to get inside the vehicle, sit down, and have a look around.

2. Bundle Accessories

If you will need some moving accessories, don't be afraid to bundle them in with your truck rental. Moving companies often offer moving boxes, dollies, and other accessories for a small fee. These accessories can make your move easier and safer. They can also save you money, as you won't need to purchase these separately or rent them from another company.

3. Inspect the Truck

Before you sign the rental agreement, make sure you inspect the moving truck thoroughly. Take a piece of paper and pen with you so that you can note any damages. Even if it is just a small scratch or a minor dent, make sure you write it down and show the rental company. You could also take photos of the vehicle before you take off. Doing this could save you some money, as rental companies will often charge extra for damages that are incurred during the move.

4. Don't Let Anyone Else Drive

Finally, make sure that you are the only person that drives the vehicle. Most truck rental companies only want one driver driving the vehicle. If the rental company finds out that another driver was driving the vehicle, you might be charged extra. So, if you are going on a longer trip, be sure to include them in your rental agreement. Although you might have to pay for extra insurance, it will still be much cheaper than paying for a non-authorized driver fine.

Renting box truck for short (or long distance) moves can save you a lot of money. But to save even more money and stay safe, you should follow these four tips.
